Plot summary:
Scout's second year in the school begins. Jem reveals the untold truth to Scout about the night at the Radley place. Once the shotgun was heard, Jem ran for his life, subsequently tearing his pants and mysteriously, when he goes back to retreive them, it is found sewed and folded up near the fence, like someone was expecting Jem to come back for it. A few days after this incident, Jem and Scout spot a ball of gray twine inside the knot-hole inside the tree. They intially decide to leave it alone but the mystery of how it got there becomes overwhelming that they decide to take the objects home eventually. Later, Jem and Scout find more things placed inside the knot-hole such as a soap depicting images of themselves carved on the surface, a tarnished medal, a broken pocket watch connected to an aluminum knife. They find these items eerie and wonder where they come from. As a result, Jem and Scout decide to thank this secret "giver" by leaving a letter, as anything they've found it there wound up in their possesion. When they are ready to deliver the letter in the knot hole, they find out that the knot-hole has been filled with cement by Mr. Nathan Radley. According to Mr. Nathan Radley, he has filled the hole becaus the tree was "dying,". Jem finds this theory ridiculous but when the children confront Atticus for the state of the tree and the fact it is filled with cement, Atticus replies that the tree looked very healthy. Not knowing why Mr. Nathan Radley has blocked the hole, the children are left dissapointed and the mystery of who gave them these items remains a mystery.
Setting: In chapter 7, most of the story takes place around Boo Radleys yard, the school, and Atticus Finchs' yard. All of which is in Alabama, Maycomb County

Character Profile: Scout Finch: Scout or Jean Louise Finch is the narrator of this book, and is a second grader in chapter 7. She is an adventurous and curious young girl who lives with her dad Atticus, her brother Jem and her cook Calpurnia. She loves reading and climbing tree houses and definetely hates wearing dresses, as she can't do certain "activities" she desires to do in those attires.
Jem Finch: Jem or Jeremy Finch, is Scout's four-year-older brother, who is also curious and adventurous, just like Scout. Both Scout and Jem always have the courage to stand up for the ones who speak bad of their father, Atticus.
Atticus Finch: Atticus is the father of Jem and Scout and always gives them advice for making the right choices in their daily lives. He has the personalities of being giving, courageous, witty and caring - making him the best dad he could be for his children. He works as a lawyer in Maycomb County, and is given a case of defending a black person named Tom Robinson. He would not give up, no matter how much the people around him might critisize. Nathan Radley: Older brother of Boo Radley. He returns to home when their father the old Mr.Radley dies. He is rather a selfish, and unsocial person, as he cements the knot hole of the tree on purpose, when he obviously knew what Jem and Scout were getting from that knot hole.
